How to invest in Private Equity

For high net worth and sophisticated investors

For years, investors confined to mainstream stocks and shares may have been missing out. With more companies choosing to stay (or be taken) private, many compelling investments are no longer available via the stock markets.

This means many of the best businesses to invest in are no longer available via mainstream platforms. Out of around 159,000 companies worldwide with revenues over $100 million, a mere 19,000 (12%) are publicly listed. The rest (88%) are privately owned.

Meanwhile the stock market universe has been shrinking, as more companies are snapped up by private equity firms.

Until recently, individual investors have largely been shut out of private equity funds. Only large institutions and the super-wealthy were able to participate. This is now changing.

How can UK investors now access Private Equity?

[Cover] Investing in Private Equity and Private Markets

For a long time, top Private Equity funds were the preserve of institutional investors, ultra-high-net-worth individuals and family offices. A combination of high minimum investments and long capital lock-up periods meant private equity funds were effectively off limits to individual investors.

Now, thanks to new, more flexible fund types, it’s possible for qualifying individual investors to get exposure to Private Equity from as little as £10,000 minimum investment – and even hold such funds in a SIPP (Self Invested Personal Pension).

That said, these funds are only for experienced investors, due to the high risks, long time commitment and illiquidity. You should not invest money you cannot afford to lose.

This free guide from Wealth Club, in partnership with Brookfield Oaktree and EQT, tells you what you need to know about investing in private equity.
